The F-1 visa allows foreign nationals to live in the U.S. to study full-time at an accredited educational institution.
The spouse and dependent children of an F-1 visa holder are eligible for F-2 visas. With an F-2, dependent children may attend grade school, from kindergarten through 12th grade. A spouse and children with F-2 visas may attend recreational classes as well.
F-1 visa holders may not work during their first academic year off-campus, but may work on-campus under certain conditions. After the first academic year, F-1 students are eligible to apply for off-campus employment through OPT (Optional Practical Training). F-1 students who graduate with a science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) degree may apply for a 24-month STEM OPT extension.
Students holding an F-1 visa who graduate with a science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) degree and are approved for a post-graduation OPT period may apply for a 24-month extension.

Once a foreign national is accepted to a Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP)-certified school, the designated school official (DSO) will provide that individual with a Form I-20 (Certificate for Eligibility for Nonimmigrant Status). For an F-1 visa, a student must:
At the visa interview, a consular officer will determine whether you are qualified to receive a F-1 visa. A digital fingerprint scan may be taken during the interview. F-1 visas can be issued up to 120 days before classes begin. However, an F-1 visa holder will only be allowed to enter the U.S. 30 day or less before classes begin.
